Social Gestures and the Social Web – Part I

Social Gesturing is at the heart of the social web. Those little signals have a small footprint but a large impact.

The crowd-sourced nature of social gestures adds up to a lot of value. After all, Facebook with all its might was mostly based and founded on 3 basic social gestures: liking, sharing and linking, each taking a fraction of a second to accomplish.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the hierarchy of social gestures in terms of value and potential.  And I came-up with the following way to organize them into a taxonomy where certain gestures are grouped with each other according to the objective they are meant to achieve and the purpose they target: People, Interests or Content.

The graph below is self-explanatory. The objective of social gesturing is to a) grab Attention, b) Express yourself, c) Curate interests (or content), d) develop Relationships, or e) Engage with people.

The most commonly used Social Gestures are Sharing, Linking and Liking when it comes to Content, and Following or Friending when it comes to People. But the area that holds the most promise is Engagement with People.

There is an ascending amount of time it takes to accomplish each gesture. If you look at the two extremes, Discussing something with someone is a lot more time-consuming than Clicking on content or Sharing it.

Personally, and for Engagio, I’m very interested in the gestures around Social Engagement. I think we’re just getting started in that segment, and I plan to cover more on that topic in Part II of this post.

Mobile Trading

The Procyon Holdings (PROHD) name is expanding again as we push out into another development area — the Android framework. When I abandoned my BlackBerry, the choice to move to the Android platform was an easy decision. Market saturation, the development community, and fluidity between devices make this platform shine.

I’ve been having a few end user problems with the current iteration of our trading website. First, the native Android Gingerbread browser lacks SVG support, an issue that has bewildered me since I read about it. I can solve this issue by using another browser such as Opera, but I would like to use the native one.

Also working with a HTML + Ajax website on a device with a touch interface feels like you are not getting the full user experience. I want to scroll down lists with my finder, click and hold to expose options, and speed around menus.

Mobile Architecture

We had to expand our design and create a few new pieces to get data to the mobile world. New items include the creation of a daemon to simply database population, exposing data via XML, and working with an existing library to enable Push notifications.

Information Flow

The Daemon runs on our server, periodically pulls transactions from the Eve API, and places that information in our wallet table.

Our previous design was that you would have to hit the transactions webpage and it would trigger an update. Getting a page to refresh on a desktop connected via broadband versus a mobile phone is quite the different experience.

Android has a framework called C2DM(Android Cloud to Device Messaging) which enables you to send lightweight push notifications to devices.

Our vision is that when a sell order clears, a large/special sale has occurred, or a significant milestone has been reached, we send a notice. This will be visible on phone’s Status Notification Bar and cause me to act if deemed important. I have been forgetting to buy or trade a particular item after the sell orders have cleared. Forget things — loose profit.

Getting data out of our database required the creation of a webservice to produce XML output from our wallet table.

This screenshot is our first proof of concept. We’re able to get information from an XML feed, display it, and get/cache images from the Eve image server. Major credit goes to my trading and corporation partner James, who has been doing the development work and educating me on the Android framework.

There is a lot we want to do with the mobile version. Menus, tabs, charts, reports, and the ability to add items to a shopping cart/wish list are all things on the drawing board.

Future Collaboration

This project is our first exposure to the Android framework and after the initial learning curve, we might perhaps coolabrate with the Aideron Robotics team on Aura. So maybe some of our trading mechanics will make their way into the Aura application.

Getting the Distance between Locations using Google Maps API

Modifying my post on drawing directions in a MapView using Google's API, I have come up with a solution to get the distance between two locations. Considering the same example I modified getDirections() to the method given below which returns distance as a string in kms(or meters).

How to get more page views for your blog

“What makes a blog popular? What drives page views?” These are the questions that we’ve been trying to answer over the last few weeks. We were on a mission to dig into the data and analyze the strongest parameters that influence the flow of visitors to WordPress.com blogs.

Out of the 30+ million blogs on WordPress.com, we randomly selected a sample of almost 100,000 blogs to perform a regression analysis. Here are our findings, together with a few recommendations. We hope that this provides some new information, and kudos to you in case you’ve already incorporated these tips into your blog – the data suggests that you’re on the right track. Keep it up!

Make your blog easy to follow – It almost sounds obvious, but the simplest way to build more awareness is to make it easier to do so. Make sure that you have the follow widget as visible as possible. If your readers receive a notification every time you post, or see your post in their reader, there is a much higher chance that they will revisit your blog.

Comments, Comments, Comments – The most successful blogs, we found, created and encouraged a dialogue with their readers. The best way to make people more engaged with your writing is for you to engage back and start a conversation. In your posts, encourage people to comment. Also, make sure that you reply to people’s comments and continue the dialogue. This back and forth conversation is a significant driver of page views; holding all else equal, every additional comment can potentially drive up to 18 incremental page views! You can start by simply asking follow-up questions at the end of each post: ”have you ever done X?”; “do you think Y is acceptable?”. You can read some more thoughts on how to build your audience  and how to get more comments.

Post Frequently and Regularly – Your readers want to know that you are there for them and that you are “on it”. If you post frequently and regularly and have enabled the follow feature as we mentioned above, checking your blog could become a daily routine for your readers. Even if it’s a short post, write something new as frequently as possible, and at regular intervals. (The Daily Post can help with ideas, as can the advice on how to get more traffic)

While these three tips were shown to be the most important drivers of page views in our analysis, you might consider other parameters, which we found as having a partially significant effect: syndicating your post to Twitter and Facebook (using Publicize), for example, could lead to additional page views.

Google to bring cheap Android tablets

The internet giant is reportedly set to launch a sub-Rs 10,000 tablet later this year.

Google has said that it will focus more on lower end tablets.

“There’s been a lot of success on some lower-priced tablets that run Android, maybe not the full Google version of Android, but we definitely believe that there is going to be a lot of success at the lower end of the market. It’s definitely an area we think is important and we’re quite focused on,” Larry Page, Google’s chief executive officer, was reported as saying.

Currently, there are a lot of cheap Android tablets in the market but these are mostly from lesser known manufacturers.

Google’s direct involvement in low cost Android tablets could be revolutionary. In fact, the online giant is reportedly set to launch a sub $200 (Rs 10,000) device this year itself. The tablet is said to have a 7 inch display with Android 4.0 operating system, a quad core processor, and WiFi for internet access.

Social Media Integration

Spotify & Social Media

Spotify music applications offer easy integration with a large variety of different, popular social media channels. With their user-friendly applications, integrating your music lifestyle into your previously established social media channels is fairly simple. Such social media channels that your Spotify application can integrate with are Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flickr. As of this year, Spotify was completely redesigned in order to fully and completely integrate into both Facebook and Twitter accounts. The new application also has fully functioning/interactive applications, embedded into its database structure, such as last.fm, billboard.com, and Sounddrop.

Some of the key features of this fully-integrated platform offer sharing and tracking functions with your automatically-synchronized social media friends. Such functions include tracking what your friends are listening to, discovering  what sort of music and playlists are “trending”, as well as even  collaborating on shared playlists with other friends or users. These social media integration features have become such a vital part of this new social experience (i.e. Spotify) that new users are required to have a Facebook or Twitter account in order to complete registration of the service.

Last but not least, this marriage between Spotify and Facebook has also brought upon a little reverse-integration to the pairing. This reverse-integration comes from the recent addition and invention of a fully-functioning Spotify music application embedded on the Facebook website server.

Billa II – Teaser Promo

Ajith is back with Billa II after the successful 2007 flick Billa which was directed by Vishnuvardhan. Expected to release on 25th May, Billa II is supposed to be a prequel to Billa ( unlike Don-2 which was a sequel ) and talks about how David, an ordinary man from coastal Tamil Nadu becomes the dreaded don Billa. Directed by Chakri Toleti  and also starring Parvathy Omanakuttan, Bruna Abdullah, Vidyut Jamwal and Sudhanshu Pandey in supporting roles who all make their debut in Tamil cinema, the film has music by Yuvan Shankar Raja and R.D.Rajasekharis the DOP.

Expected to be the big ticket summer Tamil release, watch this interesting teaser for now.

A Movie Story & Directed by Rajesh M who has done the film neatly in commercial and full of comedy.
The producer Udhayanidhi himself is the Hero of the film with Santhanam making full comedy. Heroine is Hansika, Saranya Ponvanna Udhayanidhi mother, Uma Padbhanan Hansika’s mother and father is Shiyaji Shinde. With varadha rajan and others.

From the beginning itself the movie moves in the comedy track and full of comedy mixed with stunts, songs in foreign locations. Songs are all good, music by Harris Jayraj, Camera Balasubramniam, Lyrics Na Muthukumar, Arts: Jacy, Choreography: Dinesh, Stunts Rajasekar, Editing Vivek Harshan PRO: Nikil

Very neatly and in commercial and comedy fully with excellent timings by both Udyanidhi and santhanam speaks about the story. Udhayanidhi being produced many films is hero in this and does not looks like a new actor and done his part in very good manner with Hansika a beauty fitted perfectly for the Hero.

An wonderful comedy mixed commercial movie with all credits.

Explore the REST API

I have had the pleasure of working with the WordPress.com REST API over the past few weeks and am very excited to start “dogfooding” this resource everywhere I can.

One cool feature is that all the endpoints are self-documenting. In fact, the documentation for the REST API is built by the API itself! With this information we were able to build a console to help debug and explore the various resources that are now available through the new API. So let me introduce you to the new REST console for WordPress.com.

A word of caution: the console is only available when you are logged into WordPress.com and is hooked up to the live system, so be careful with your POST requests!

At its simplest you can supply the method, path, query, and body for the resource you wish to examine (it’s pre-populated with /me). Press “Submit” to see the response status for your request and an expandable JSON object that you can explore. All links listed under meta are active, so click one to make another request.

To get a better idea of what kind of parameters a request can take, select it under the “Reference” section. It will then provide an interface with some contextual help to let you know which path, query, and body parameters it accepts, what each of those parameters are for, and a field for you to provide the value.

India’s most expensive film is another Rajinikanth hit

India’s most expensive film ever is a Frankenstein tale of a scientist who makes a robot in his own image, which turns into a monster and falls in love with his maker’s fiancee.

And it looks set to be another mega-hit for one of Bollywood’s most bankable stars, Rajinikanth, a balding 61-year-old whose unstoppable box office staying power seems almost as incredible as the film’s plotline.

Made with a budget of 1.6bn rupees ($35m; £23m), Enthiran is a story about a killer robot who multiplies into a million clones, destroying Chennai (Madras), the capital of the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

But this terrifying army of androids is dwarfed in real life by the legions of fans of the movie’s cult mega-star, Rajinikanth, Bollywood’s highest-paid actor.

In Enthiran (Robot), Rajinikanth plays the nutty professor and his creation, the humanoid robot, Chitti.

The lovey-dovey android serenades his creator’s fiancee, played by another Bollywood star, Aishwarya Rai, singing that he will seek love in places “where Google searches can’t reach”.

James Bond ‘snubbed’

She purrs and calls him her “toyfriend”; he sings that her beauty has set him burning to temperatures that even the “Atlantic Ocean cannot cool”.

Smart lines, diabolical characters, high-voltage action and impressive special effects make this a promising Indian popcorn movie.

Then there are the lush song sequences in exotic locations like Machu Picchu.

The film’s spin machine claims that the Peruvian authorities had “refused the shooting of a James Bond film, but allowed our Rajinikanth to dance”.

The critics may be cringing, and at nearly 180 minutes, Endhiran is rather long, but the film has stormed the box office since opening last weekend.

The movie is also the product of an industry which is fast becoming globalised, despite its unique brand of cinema.

The special effects are cooked up by a Hollywood FX shop that has worked on films like Jurassic Park and Terminator.

The action scenes were staged by a Hong Kong choreographer who has worked with Jackie Chan and on the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

The music is scored by the Oscar-winning AR Rahman – the songs are a fusion of lilting Tamil numbers set to Malaysian rap and hip hop, and bouncy electro-pop.

As so often, Rajinikanth steals the show.

“The two worthwhile creations of God are you and me”, he tells the film’s heroine.

At least half that statement would be heartily agreed with by members of the more than 6,000 Rajinikanth fan clubs that have spawned across India.

He is especially popular in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, where film stars are venerated like gods.

In a recent article, slate.com rated Rajinikanth as the second-highest-paid actor in Asia, after Jackie Chan.

‘Style King’

“If a tiger had sex with a tornado and then their tiger-nado baby got married to an earthquake, their offspring would be Rajinikanth,” says a review in slate.com.

n Japan, his film Muthu was dubbed in Japanese as The Dancing Maharaja and became a huge hit in 1995.

Rajinikanth’s success is all the more remarkable considering he has no obvious aptitude as a dancer – a talent so desirable for Tamil musicals.

His eccentric mannerisms and histrionics have earned him the nickname Style King. But he remains the most beloved star of the Tamils.

His fans thought nothing of queuing from the early hours outside cinemas on the day of the film’s premiere.

Rajinikanth’s followers have been known to perform Hindu bathing purification rituals on his posters.

The success of Endhiran ensures that their worship of the Bollywood megastar will continue.

Friday Fiesta 10-09-10

The first Friday of September turned out to be a very ordinary. Six films were released last Friday and surprisingly a dubbed film walked away with the cake. Industry sources say the Hollywood dubbed 3d film ‘Piranha3D’ had out done all the films released last week. It collected approximately Rs. 76 lacs from 72 screens in the state. What’s more surprising is that Piranha, a flop at the international box office took 100 per cent opening in the city. The film may be in 3D but most Hollywood films releasing these days are in 3D. The trend is educative. Better to learn things quick.

This Friday, September10 has six releases. Boss Engira Baskaran, Vanthe Matharam, Drohi and Tirupur are straight Tamil films. Maruthani and Resident Evil 4 are dubbed from Telugu and English respectively.

‘Boss Engira Baskaran’ is the movie of this week. It’s a comedy about a forever helpful guy Baskaran (Arya) who is always busy doing odd jobs for other people. In the process he misses a lot of his personal life and doesn’t seem to embark on a useful career. When things almost go out of hand, a no-nonsense young girl Chandrika (Nayantara) enters his life and puts him on right track. A middle class love also blooms on the way.

Arya has tried comedy for the first time and Nayantara adds that needed glitter to the film. Santhanam’s comedy will be a major attraction they say. Director Rajesh has already proved his flair for romantic comedy with his first film ‘Siva Manasula Sakthi’. Lot of expectations on BEB because of Rajesh’s direction. Also because that the film is rumoured to be the last Tamil film of Nayantara.

‘Vanthe Matharam’ is a bilingual multi starrer which started off as ‘Aruvadai’. It is produced by Henry who gave meaningful films like ‘Bharathi Kannamma’ and ‘Marumalarchi’ before. The film is about a group of officers who challenge terrorist attempts to infiltrate south India. In the process it analyses farmers struggle and related terrorism and puts forward an innovative amicable solution to have lasting peace. The film will ignite high level of patriotic fervor with its hard hitting dialogues.

Mammootty and Arjun play police officers and Sneha plays a woman pilot. A highlight of the film is a patriotic song rendered by ten popular singers. T. Aravind of ‘Aravindan’ fame has directed this.

‘Drohi’ is another film worth to try out this week end. The film is a high energy story of two young friends, who love each other and hate each other to the same degree. Chocolate boy Srikanth has turned a tough guy in this double hero subject. Vishnu is the other strong man. . Pooja, Poonam Bajwa, Poorna and Thiagarajan also feature in this film. Pooja is said to have given a hard hitting performance. Woman Director Sudha was an assistant to Mani Ratnam. So you can expect some finesse in the film.

‘Tirupur’ is releasing with a tagline ‘Friends are life givers’. A group of friends go to Pollachi for a wedding and one among them sees his dream girl there. When the boy along with his friends go to her home town Tirupur to meet and propose they find her under the custody of a nasty villain. How they get got her out of his clutches is the interesting story. Uday and Unni Maya play the lovers. MC Duraisamy has written and directed this film.

‘Maruthani’ is a 2008 Telugu film ‘Ghorintaku’ dubbed in Tamil. The film is supposedly a tear jerking ‘brother-sister’ formula film. Sister going to her in laws place after marriage is distressed and returns to her brother. Later the brother takes up the cause to give her a better life sacrificing everything he has. Here the brother and sister both die at the end in each others arms.

`Dr. Rajashekar of ‘Idhuthanda Police’ and ‘Evanayiruntha Enakkaena’ fame is the doting brother and Meera Jasmine is the devoted sister. Aarthi Agarwal and Hema Choudhary are other main cast. A separate comedy track with Mayilsamy, Aarthi and Payilvan Ranganathan has been filmed for Tamil version. Our SA Rajkumar is the music director. You must appreciate the guts of the producer to release the film in these times.

‘Resident Evil 4’ is an action themed science fiction film. It takes off from where the third part ended. In the world ravaged by the T-Virus Alice gets superhuman abilities after exposure to the T-Virus. Alice roams around searching for survivors and leads them to safety.  Her arch nemesis Umbrella is hunting for her to use her DNA in order to control the virus’ mutation. Alice also is looking for him to ‘settle her score’. Alice comes face to face with her arch-nemesis, Albert Wesker, for the first time in the series. Milla Jovovich plays Alice. Other cast includes Ali Larter, Kim Coates and Shawn Roberts.

This is going to be last big Friday for some time to come. As ‘Endhiran’ release is imminent there’s not going to be much action in releases in the coming weeks. ‘Endhiran’ is going to occupy over 100 theaters in TN cities and so everything else will wait.

Boss Engira Baskaran Movie Review

Boss Engira Baskaran – Yes Boss

Director Rajesh seems to have begun from where he left in ‘Siva Manasula Sakthi’. Though he is just one-film old, he has almost mastered the knack of rendering a movie that oozes with energy, fun and laughter right from reel one to the last.

Humour is no easy job. It is a serious business. In ‘Boss Engira Baskaran’, the director and his team have emerged successful in coming out with an unpretentious entertainer, ably executed by a wonderful star cast – Arya, Nayanthara, Santhanam and Subbu Panchu among others.

It may be a simple storyline, but the way in which Rajesh approaches it makes the difference. His dialogues and screenplay are the backbone. Especially the one-liners by Santhanam no doubt brings the roof down in laughter. Arya is at his ease delivering a befitting performance, while Nayanthara sans much glamour is a treat to watch.

A callous youth is bitten by love bug. With the help of his friend, he goes hammer and tongs to climb the ladder of success in life. This is what ‘Boss…’ is all about. A shrewd Rajesh has made spoof of some contemporary films, added right commercial elements with humour as under current, and the end product, eventually, is impressive.

The whole story unfolds in Kumbakonam. At a time when most filmmakers go around Madurai with action-packed themes, ‘Boss…’ comes as a relief. Baskaran (Arya), affectionately called as Boss by friends is a happy-go-lucky youngster who strives hard to clear his arrear exams. For him the day starts in the company of Nallathambi (Santhanam), who runs a saloon. Boss’s family comprising his mom, elder brother Saravanan (Subbu Panchu) and sister lead a happy life.

Boss comes across Chandrika (Nayantara) and it’s love at first sight for him. Interestingly, she happens to be a trainee professor and Boss is caught by her while copying in an exam. Turn of events results in Chandrika’s sister (Vijayalakshmi) marrying Saravanan. When Boss expresses his desire to marry Chandrika all hell breaks loose. He is chided for his callous lifestyle and irresponsibility.

Boss takes a vow to earn money in six months and get his sister married before holding the hands of Chandrika. He takes refuge in Nalathambi’s saloon. With the help of his friend, he tries to make money, but nothing works out. Meanwhile, Chandrika appears now and then and urges him to achieve his mission.

Now Boss and Nallathambi start a tutorial college with money obtained from a loan shark Velpandi (‘Naan Kadavul’ Rajendran) under one condition – that to help his son who repeatedly flunked in exams to pass or otherwise become a servant in his house. They face many a hurdle in their mission, but eventually they succeed.

Boss earns money and gets his sister married. But his desire of marrying Chandrika shatters as her father is against the proposal, thanks to a stupid act by the two friends. Now enters an NRI youth (Jiiva) to marry Chandrika. It’s game between him and Boss.

Kudos to Arya who pulled it off well. After a serious portrayal in ‘Madrasappatinam’, he is right there bringing out his comical skills to the fore. As a callous youth, he fits the bill exceedingly well. In other words, the vintage Arya of ‘Arindhum Ariyamalum’ is back. His comical antics in the company of Santhanam are enjoyable.

Nayantara plays a professor and is draped in sarees sans much glamour. She plays her part well. Subbu Panchu as Arya’s brother is adequate. Son of veteran producer Panchu Arunachalam, he is good at giving out what the director wants. ‘Friends’ fame Vijayalakshmi, Lakshmi as Arya’s mother, Chitra Lakshmanan as Nayantara’s father get under the skin of their respective characters and play well.

But the real scene-stealer is Santhanam. His wits, punches are enjoyable. As Arya’s friend, who always gets into a tangle for no fault of his, he has done a great job. Santhanam has announced his arrival to the big league of comedians with this movie.

Kumbakonam has been captured at its pristine beauty by Sakthi Saravanan. His use of soft tones fits well for a laughathon. Also songs in foreign locales get life thanks to him. Giving him good company is Yuvanshankar Raja. As usual, he has come up with songs that gel with the story. The number ‘Yar Intha Penthan…’ is humable.

Rajesh has made spoof of some contemporary Tamil films in an enjoyable manner. Quite like ‘Thamizh Padam’, they are outrightly hilarious. Produced by K S Srinivasan and presented by Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies and Arya’s The Show People, ‘Boss Engira Baskaran’ is right there oozing with abundant energy and unlimited fun. Kudos to Udhayanidhi for choosing quality films with varied stories that leave an impression with the masses.

Got to watch the Tamil movie – Vamsam in theater few days back. As I was much impressed with the director Pandiraj’s previous movie “pasanga”, my expectations was lil bit high. And the review in Ananda vikadan – a Tamil weekly magazine also added more expectations in to me. While watching the movie I was lil bit disappointed with a usual village subject with normal stuffs. But the efforts were good and cleanly displayed. The second half of the movie is good, especially Jayaprakash and Kishore’s performance were extraordinary. But I feel, director Pandiraj can do much more than this. I feel for these kind of movies the music is most important one. But this movie failed to impress with the music. But one thing I hate with this move and not only with this movie and with all other movies about the particular caste system. told positive or negative, but it creates impact on common people. Cinema is not only a entertainment media for most ppl, it travels beyond that. It gets into many lives and hearts. And a sensitive media too. This generation doesn’t need the things related to caste system and the stories related to that. It will create a impact on this generation too. We don’t want to see a caste based division and discrimination again with our generation. And we need our next generation without caste existence. I’m aware that these caste and subdivision are created with some good reason, but all the ex-generation gentlemen spoiled those values and now it is carried with different note and intention. And with the rapidly changing in the attitude of the living style in people, these things doesn’t mean much. So better to avoid to deal it detail in movies. Coming to this film Vamsam, the movie deals with a south region caste and portrayed the so called tradition and culture. The worst part is , few of my friends being a good critic , they like this movie and praised this movie blindly with no reason. I wondered why it was…then while discussing to them in detail, I came to know that they are from the same caste and region and they feel proud about this. I’m not finding a fault in them. Because movies is not only a entertainment , it also creates impacts. What we say culture and tradition in movies are not actually. Things were created for good cause and later it has been used for different cause. Lets create a new caste & religion free world for our next modern generation. Singam Movie Review

Cop stories doesn’t necessarily mean the hero bashing goons, mouthing punch dialogue or standing stiff. The cop can be simple, straight forward and still accomplish his mission.

Filmmaker Hari and actor Suriya, who come together after ‘Aaru’ and ‘Vel’, have laced ‘Singam’, Suriya’s 25th movie, with such events that sustain the attention of masses all through. Both have a major responsibility on their shoulders as their earlier cop stories (‘Samy’ and ‘Kaakha Kaakha‘ respectively) did raise the bar in Kollywood. ‘Singam’, which sounds a masculine title, is a pukka commercial entertainer.

Though the story may sound similar to many mass masala movies before, Hari’s pacy treatment to the screenplay and Suriya’s screen presence gives necessary pep.

A collage of action, song, romance and comedy at right mix has always been a safe bet. With Suriya at the helm of affairs, the commercial cocktail straightaway sticks to our heart. The movie comes with a huge star cast as in any of the Hari film before.

Besides Suriya, it has Anushka, Vivek, Prakash Raj, Nasser, Sumitha, Manorama, Vijayakumar, Bose Venkat and ‘Nizhalgal’ Ravi to name a few in the cast.

The movie tells the tale of a simple and sincere police officer Duraisingam alias Singam (Suriya), a sub inspector in Nallur in Tuticorin district. He wants to run the family business – running a provision shop and convert it to a huge departmental store. But his father (Radha Ravi) fantasizes him to become a cop. He lives up to his father’s words and becomes a sub-inspector in the local police station.

An amiable family, Singam lives at peace with everyone. Obviously their family is respected a lot in the village. Enters Kavya (Anushka), on a vacation to the village to her grandparents’ house. She comes across Singam and his upright manner and righteous nature attracts her. It’s romance between them.

There is ‘Eatu’ Erimalai (Vivek), who works as a head constable in the police station. Fate now enters in the form of Mayilvaganan (Prakash Raj), a dreaded baddie in Chennai who is into evil acts to make money. He is aided by his brother Vaikundan (Aadhi). He bumps off an old man in Nallur village when he denies parting with money demanded by him.

The old man was constructing a house in the village thanks to his sons’ money from abroad. His death has severe repercussions as his sons shoot a mail on the death to the embassy. This leaves in the arrest of Mayivaganan, who manages to get a conditional bail that he has to appear at Nallur police station and sign everyday.

Mayilvaganan comes face to face with Singam and his upright ways increases his wrath. He uses his might to get Singam promoted as inspector and brings him to Chennai. It’s now a cat and mouse game between Singam and Mayilvaganan.

Singam comes across another side of Mayilvaganan – that he runs a kidnap racket and gets away with ransom. By bringing to books the nasty side of Mayilvaganan, the Home Minister (Vijayakumar) promotes him as ACP –Anti Corruption Squad operations. Meanwhile Singam’s chase begins. How he accomplishes his mission forms the climax to a movie that begins in Nallur, (TN) and ends in Nellore, (AP).

Its out-and-out Suiriya show. He plays a cop who is in total contrast to Anbu Selvan in ‘Kaakha Kaakha’. If Anbu was stiff and serious, Singam is cool but furious. The latter is friendly and has strings in his culture. Suriya is flawless in his expressions and delivers his best body language.

Anushka is more than a regular heroine here. She romances with Suriya and got a few scenes to perform too. Prakash Raj is the scene-stealer back to do what he knows the best. He is menacing with his eyes and does a good role that he has done many a time before. Vivek as head constable evokes laughter.

Devi Sri Prasad‘s racy music is another highlight. His fast songs compliment the swift screenplay. Priyan’s cinematography is cool and pleasant.

Due credit goes to Hari. The man in his 10th film has given a movie that has his stamp in the form of an entertaining and engrossing screenplay. Unlike his earlier films where there would be wild chase and men all over with aruvals, ‘Singam’ comes with a difference.
